Tanzania, first client of Turkish contractor services

Tanzania was the top market for the services of Turkish contractors in 2017, making it the first African country ever to be the biggest customer for Turkey’s construction sector, the head of a Turkish foreign trade body said on Friday.

Turkish builders undertook $ 3.1 billion worth of projects in Tanzania last year and the country has left behind Turkey’s traditional markets such as Russia, Turkmenistan, Libya and Turkey. ‘Saudi Arabia,’ said Nail Olpak, chairman of the Turkish Foreign Economic Relations Council. .

Turkish builders developed 241 projects worth $ 14.7 billion in 2017, Olpak said at a session of a trade and economic forum between Turkey and the Economic Community of African States. West (ECOWAS) in Istanbul.

He said Mozambique was also among the top ten countries to receive the lion’s share of Turkey’s construction sector.

Also speaking at the event, Selim Bora, chairman of Turkish conglomerate Summa, said businessmen should be mindful of the needs of African countries in order to be successful on the continent.

“Africa is open to investment, especially in construction,” Bora said, adding that “vision, enthusiasm, risk taking, willpower, operational readiness, dedication and honesty” were the key to success there.
